Although the Small College teams won’t hit the Stadium Field until tomorrow, day one of the 2024 CRC Women’s Small College Cup was a showcase of world class rugby.
With six tries to her name, Ohio Wesleyan’s Kayla Saikaly sits as Small College’s top try scorer, missing the top spot for total points by a differential of just one. Saikaly and the rest of the Bishops ended the day with a 2-1 record, putting them in contention for ninth place against the Great Waters Conference standouts from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
Christopher Newport senior Erin Sample was slated to make waves this weekend, but CNU came up short, even with her powerful offense and multiple conversions. The Captains will play South Dakota in tomorrow’s competition for 11th place. Sample’s teammate, Maurina Street ends day one on the try leaderboard, along with Morgan Mattia (East Stroudsburg), Annika Chiang-Boeckmann, Lucky Barest (Colby), Jaden Lohr (Gannon), and McKenna Dutton (UW Platteville).
Gannon University flyhalf Lexie Hulick ended Saturday on top of the statistical leaderboard, as the Golden Knights are set to face Niagara (10-5 over South Dakota, 15-10 over East Stroudsburg) in tomorrow’s second semi final match.
Before that, Yale will take on the Mules from Colby University, who fought their way to two massive, shutout victories over Western Oregon (50-0) and Siena (47-0). Small College semifinals start at 11:40 a.m. in the stadium, concluding the bracket with a championship match at 3:51pm.
