Coastguard Gets Their Gold

To win a championship, a team must battle through adversity even when the bounces don’t seem to go their way. This was definitely the case with Coast Guard against Roger Williams in the Women’s Division II final of the Collegiate Rugby Championship Sunday, when the Bears had two players taken off the field due to serious injury. Despite the hurdle, they persevered and picked up a 17-5 victory.

Coast Guard advanced to the final with a 17-12 victory over Towson. The Hawks booked their ticket in the championship game courtesy of a 24-19 win against Marist.

Coast Guard opened the scoring in the second minute with a try by eventual MVP Kaitlyn Boggs. Just a minute later, Roger Williams equalized when Kaya Haddad recorded a try of her own.

In the sixth minute, Boggs finished off her brace when she scored her second try of the afternoon. The Bears then closed out the scoring and clinched their championship when Savannah McBrayer notched a try and then added the conversion to make the score 17-5.

In the third-place game, Marist upended Towson 24-19 while Coastal Carolina took home the Plate with a 19-10 win against New Mexico State. The Bowl belongs to Wisconsin-Eau Claire who thumped New Hampshire 34-12 and, in the Shield Final, the Razorbacks of Arkansas picked up a 20-14 victory over Syracuse.

Boggs was also named the MVP of the tournament. In four tournament games she recorded 11 tries for 55 points.
