The Collegiate Rugby Championships has only seen one champion in the Women’s Premier Cup since making its home at the Maryland Soccerplex – Brown. Sunday, the Bears made it a three-peat, defeating Army 19-7 in the final.
The Bears advanced to the match with a 19-7 victory over Penn State, while the Black Knights upset American International College by a 15-5 score.
In the final, Army jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after a try in the first minute and a successful conversion. Brown bounced back with tries by Laryssa Barbosa and successful conversions by Julia Murray in the last couple minutes of the half. The Bears then closed out the scoring in the 14th minute with a try by tournament MVP Akilah Cathey.
In other action on Sunday, AIC defeated Penn State for third place 22-14, Queens beat Wheeling 34-12 in the Plate Final, West Chester won the Bowl Final 33-12 over Mount St. Mary’s and St. Bonaventure claimed the Shield after a 24-5 victory against Frostburg.
The leading scorer for the tournament was Naomi Dodd out of AIC. The Jamaican national teamer scored a total of 30 points on six tries.
Brown’s win makes Ros Chou the winningest women’s coach in CRC history, giving her five titles. She won the 2016 and 2017 championships with Life University, and the last three with the Bears.
