Men's DII Preview

With reigning champion Maine not in the field, there will be a new champion in Men’s Division II, even if it doesn’t feel like it. 7s champs in 2022 and 2023, and 15s titleists in 2023 and 2024, Indiana University of Pennsylvania is the top seed in the East and the Goliath of Division II.

With another win, IUP would become the first three-time 7s champion in DII history. And the only men’s team in the history of college rugby to claim five national titles in three years.

Earning the top seed in the West is Northwestern, winners of the Great Midwest automatic qualifier and Dawgtown 7s, hosted by the Chicago Hounds. Forward Dan Solomon is among the Wildcats’ top threats with ball in hand, as Northwestern looks to improve on a first-round exit last year.

Players to Watch

IUP All-American Dom Holmes is the magic man, but his single-season try record has been eclipsed by grad transfer Malcolm Johnson, who dotted down 41 times this spring.

Montana State All-American Finn Russell is back for the Bobcats, and he’ll be relied upon heavily for go-forward ball in attack and turnovers in defense.

UNC-Wilimington flyer Xavier Arrington is one of the best finishers in the country. The Wallace, NC native broke out at All-Stars with the Southeast Bears in January.

Cinderella Candidate

Tennessee Tech is making its first-ever appearance at 7s nationals, upsetting perennial SCRC favorite Memphis in the Bluff City 7s final to qualify. Coached by All-Marine 7s coach and Tonga native George Moleni, the Golden Eagles are primed for a run. Sophomore Lane Travis is a top performer, leading the team in tries and touching down the tournament winner at Bluff City.
